3.10.4. Adjectivul negativ (The Negative Adjective)

Adjectivele negative sunt adjective nehotărâte folosite în propoziții cu sens negativ și verbul la forma afirmativă. Ele sunt o subdiviziune a adjectivelor nehotărâte, care indică absența obiectelor sau a calităților acestora:

No = nici un(ul), nici una (din mai multe).

• No letter = nici o scrisoare.

  • He has made no mistakes. (Nu a făcut nicio greșeală.)

    Neither = nici unul din, nici un (din doi):

    • I asked him two questions but he answered neither of them.

      Neither poate fi folosit ca determinant sau ca pronume:

      • Neither solution is acceptable. Neither of these solutions is acceptable.

        No este folosit numai ca determinant, cu sensul de not any sau not a:

        • There are no letters today.

          • There aren’t any letters today. He was no fool. He was not a fool.

            Forma no este preferată lui not any/not a în vorbirea curentă.
